‘Fred the winter fox’ amateur Christmas pub painting

Hi everyone! My latest UnicornPostbox blog post is progression photos of a winter fox Christmas amateur pub painting…hope you like 🎄🎄

First of all, we started with the background, bold acrylic blue 💙 at the top, slowly watering down towards the bottom of the canvas. We then used our small paint brush to determine where the white snow mountains would be, and created them swooping into each other. Afterwards, we incorporated little navy blue/black trees in the mountain range and used a very clever ‘Bob Ross’ inspired technique to upwardly ‘dab’ the huge main tree, using a fan brush. Then, using out small brush, we essentially splashed speckles of white everywhere to create realistic snow ❄️ over the whole canvas. Next, we began on the fox, which at first appeared as a bit of an orange blob 🤣 or with the beak an orange duck 🤣 It was then time to add detail. Little speckles of white snow on the mountain range tree branches, and a fan brush again dabbing snow on the big tree. It was really enjoyable to be honest practicing this technique for the first time. Only left to do then was detailing the fox. Oh, and a little more touching up, such as snow shadows. Others at the class didn’t, but I sort of black outlined my fox. Rather than realistic, I am more a fan of pop art and prefer my art to ‘pop’. I think it makes him stand out more, contrasting to the other style. With his tail cuddling round him, his cute little ears and smiley face, I reckon he’s sort of adorable 🥰🥰

I don’t believe I will be posting now until after Christmas. I expect in the new year to start some new diamond arts 💎🎨 and a pub painting in January… so until then…

I hope you all have a fabulous Christmas! 🎄🎄

Thank you for all your support this year, all the best, Lauren xx

The Nutcracker ballet review

On Saturday 16th November, me and my lovely Auntie Cath went to Cast in Doncaster to see the incredible Crown Ballet production of The Nutcracker..

I have always wanted to see a ballet. During a conversation about Billy Elliot being one of my auntie’s favourite films, and her having seen Swan Lake in Bradford, which she said was outstanding 👏 , we decided to book up at Cast for what would be a fantastic Christmas ballet show 🥰

Marius Petipa (1818-1910) was a very talented ballet master, influencing, developing and pioneering a high mastery of ballet classical dance – The Nutcracker is considered a model of classical choreography; Petipa the founder of Russian ballet. In all of his ballets there is a specific subject.

In collaboration with Petipa, and working closely together, The Nutcracker was formed by Tchaikovsky, an extremely famous Russian composer. It was first performed 18th December 1892 in St Petersburg, at the Mariinsky Theatre.

Over 120 years past it’s infancy, the ballet remains an integral part of Christmas celebration. Petipa introduced the scenario, based on the Hoffman French adapted tale ‘The Nutcracker and the Mouse King’.

Although outwardly the pair, Petipa and Tchaikovsky worked together in perfect harmony, Petipa’s music was deemed too complicated for stage. Petipa actually drew out of production with ill health, and for several years his assistant Lev Ivanov took over the choreography, although Petipa continued to give strict guidelines!

Tchaikovsky was not actually initially impressed, however the story grew on him, and surpassed previous expectations, eventually loving it beyond all other projects. He had a ‘secret instrument’ from Paris, a tinkling celesta, forever associated with the sugar plum fairy 🧚‍♂️

The ballet was not an instant success, however it gained popularity, arriving in the West 1934, and now a universal Christmas favourite 🎄🎄

The synopsis of The Nutcracker is as follows (spoiler alert):

Act one, scene one: Christmas eve, and presents are gathered around a beautiful enormous Christmas tree; ballerinas, mouse dolls and a nutcracker, placed there by Marie’s father. A Christmas eve gathering commences, guests arrive and start dancing. A magician 🎩 suddenly appears, and moving toys start dancing too. This awes and fascinates all the children. A house keeper comes with a gigantic cake 🎂 It is revealed the magician is Marie’s dad, he offers out the delicious cake. Marie is too preoccupied however with her favourite nutcracker doll. As the night darkens, the guests say their farewells and the children go to sleep. Marie falls asleep with the nutcracker cosy in her arms.

Act one, scene two: Marie has such an awful dream! The king of mice, horrible and ruthless, tries to capture her beloved nutcracker. Huge ugly grey mice lurk around the room and bombard. Marie is very afraid. Thankfully the nutcracker bravely triumphs and imprisons the king of mice in a mousetrap. The nutcracker has injuries, but miraculously transforms into a handsome prince. Dancing under star-filled skies, the nutcracker invited Marie to a fairy tale realm

Act two: Everyone is joyous of the king of mice’s demise and are full of victorious celebration. The hosts of the magical world ball, the prince of pertussis and the renowned sugar plum fairy, welcome the transformed dolls. The dolls perform various dances from a wide array of countries; Chinese, Arabic, French, Russian, Spanish, etc – culminating together in an epic final dance… Unfortunately, it was all but a dream! Marie awakens on Christmas day morning, gently holding her toy nutcracker. What a shame!

The ballet was completely breathtaking, I was so impressed! So elegant, so classy, it swept you away into another world entirely. Poise, skillful mastery and sophistication. Iconic arabesques, powerful Jetes, graceful pirouettes, grand plies, the dolls dancing pas de deux duets. I was most impressed by the Arabian dolls 😍 They were simply superb, with their eastern exotic moves, all kinds of unbelievable poses, so talented!

Overall, I am delighted we decided to go see my first ballet, the Nutcracker. A perfect beginning to the festive period 🥰🥰

I have a few things lined up for my next blog posts.. I am on with a small turtle 🐢 diamond art, and another one of two colourful zebras which will take me weeks! 8000 crystals! I also have a ‘winter fox’ Christmas themed pub painting in December, and I shall also do a theatre review in the new year of three festive pantomines: Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella and Alice in Wonderland! 💕💕 So watch this space!

As always, thank you so much for supporting me and reading my blog posts. All the best, Lauren xx

‘Reni the robin’ amateur Christmas pub painting

Hello everyone! My latest UnicornPostbox blog post is progression photos of a Christmas Robin pub painting…hope you like! 😀

We started off with blue and white acrylic paint, lightly brushing blue at the top and fading into the white at the bottom. We then incorporated white snowflakes onto the blue background. The brown twig was given 3D depth with white highlights. We started off with a kind of oval shape to silhouette the robin. We painted dark green ivy with scarlet berries, and of course Reni the robin had a bright red breast, textured feathers, beady eyes, three toed feet and a black beak 🐦 And here is the finished painting…

I am actually really pleased with this one, it’s really festive and Christmas-sy 🎄 (I adore Christmas) Unfortunately there will be no more pub painting until April next year 😢 My art teacher and her partner are teaching art on a world cruise ship! How amazing is that?! What an opportunity! All the best to them, and see them in the spring 💕

My next UnicornPostbox blog post will probably be of ‘Leonardo the lion’ diamond art 🎨 💎 But I am also going to a few Christmas pantomimes so expect some theatre reviews in the not so distant future 🙂

Thank you as ever for taking the time to read/view… all the best, Lauren xx

Art therapy (amateur) descriptions

Hi everyone, happy new year!

You may not know but I have actually been in a mental health hospital for the last four and a half months. I’m doing much better thank goodness; I thought it would be nice to share though some of my promarker pen amateur art therapy drawings I’ve produced whilst being a patient, and to offer a brief description of what inspired each piece. I do hope you enjoy!

I took inspiration for this cat piece from some art therapy books I already owned. The symmetry with the mushrooms, trees and butterflies and the blue/pink colour scheme is supposed to visually depict equality and togetherness.

This abstract quirky piece depicts looking at the world with eyes of love and promoting peaceful protest.

My two giraffes are boosting upwards off the yellow brick road towards Emerald City (I can relate to all the characters in the Wizard of Oz and I am considering a full leg sleeve tattoo haha).

This is art from great imagination if I may say so, haha. It’s Christmas themed and was started for the ward unique Christmas card competition. There’s a time traveling santa ‘Ho Ho’ sack, a mushroom / tea pot house, pouring green tea where a few people are zorbing. There is also a purple mother mountain, with people and unicycle trees tobogganing down her hair. Tiny snowmen and cute gnomes and everyone flying in the air like Iron man superheroes!

This is my tree of life, with quirky people who are also little tree houses living on each branch. There are blue circles up towards heaven with writing above saying ‘heaven is a place on Earth’. I hopefully envision a future where our planet becomes a utopia; where we come together in solidarity to tackle climate change and establish a better appreciation of and connectivity with nature.

This piece is inspired by The Lion King, where Mufasa encourages Simba to remember ‘who he is’ – the rightful aire to the throne (pride rock). I strongly believe that our actions in our lifetime matter, and we therefore have a responsibility to be and strive always to be, our best selves.

Here is a dark skinned goddess with elephant arms meditating on a mandala. There is a temple (and wind turbine) doorway to the right and to the left a tipee with banner swaying, saying ‘Blessed be the peacemakers).

And last, but certainly not least, is my colourful tiger. There are ‘eye of the tiger’ lyrics. This drawing seeks to symbolise tenacity. Life isn’t about how many times you get knocked down, but how fiercely you stand up and put your gloves back on, like the god/goddess YOU are!

Thank you so much for viewing / reading 🙂

All the best, Lauren xx

Birmingham November 2018

This November, Friday 9th until Monday 12th, to be precise, me and my lovely mum visited the beautiful populous city of Birmingham. On our city break we went to the Alexandra theatre to see Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage (it was incredible), Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, Bullring shopping and the city centre, Cadbury World, National Sea Life centre, as well as dining at many swanky restaurants, particularly at Brindleyplace leisure, opposite from our posh 4* Jury’s Inn hotel on Broad Street… Please continue reading for more detailed descriptions of our travels, with accompanying photography 🙂

Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story on Stage

On the Friday evening, me and mum saw Dirty Dancing at the Alexandra theatre. We were seated in the stalls, row K, right in the middle, with the best possible view of the performance. The show was absolutely fantastic. The dialogue was very similar, it included all the memorable quotes from the film;

“I carried a watermelon. I carried a watermelon?!”

I’m scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel [dramatic pause!] when I’m with you” and the classic…

“Nobody puts baby in the corner!”

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092890/quotes

We were very pleased about this 🙂

Kira Malou, who played Baby, really perfected the character’s mannerisms, and Michael O’Reilly, playing Johnny, projected a sexy husky voice almost double to the gorgeous late Patrick Swayze. And boy, did O’Reilly have sex appeal! There was more than a few wolf-whistles echoing around the theatre throughout the show, particularly during the scenes in which Johnny was topless, funny that! 😛 The entire performance was quite naughty and raunchy, to be expected, hehe… And the dancing and music of course was simply sensational! They did the lift too, yey! At the end of the show, there was a well deserved standing ovation, everyone got up singing and dancing; the atmosphere was electric! Brilliant, we both proper loved it. Mum purchased a t-shirt, me a Dirty Dancing hoodie official merchandise, as well as two programmes. An experience to remember most definitely 🙂

Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery

Whilst in Birmingham, we had a walk around the Museum and Art Gallery, free to enter (always a bonus, lol). The museum has, notably, a vast collection of Pre-Raphaelites works, but also showcases Baroque art, Ancient Egyptian artefacts – there is a Greek and Roman gallery, a gallery solely dedicated to the fascinating history of the city, The Birmingham School of Art gallery and so on and so forth. The gallery which most intrigued me however was the Spiritual Life faith gallery. I was very interested to learn about the different faiths practised in such a multicultural, diverse and rich city, as my prior knowledge of such religions was rather limited. It sparked an interest for sure, and I have since researched some faiths further, particularly Hinduism, which I never knew actually resonates greatly with me and my personal philosophy of life. The museum and art gallery also showcased a great exhibition ‘Women Power Protest’. Commemorating the 100 year anniversary of women’s right to vote in the UK, the exhibition showed contemporary and modern artworks from local artists, Birmingham’s collection, and the Arts Council Collection, with explored themes including; activism, dignity and hope; illustrating the inequalities and injustices women have experienced, exploring how women’s bodies are depicted, and drawing attention to how, slowly, women’s experiences are becoming more visible in the world of art and artistic expression. Inspired by feminist activists and artists, the exhibition aims to;

raise awareness, provoke debate and ask just how much has changed for women?” http://www.birminghammuseums.org.uk/bmag

A very positive step in the right direction, in my opinion 🙂

Bullring shopping and the city centre

Whilst in Birmingham, me and mum obviously went into the heart of city centre, where the ginormous Bullring shopping centre is. The glistening decorations hanging inside the Bullring were simply stunning. It was really lovely because outside the Bullring, near St Martin’s Church, there was a Christmas themed Snow House globe which served alcoholic beverages, and what we opted for, delicious frothy hot chocolates, yum yum 🙂 – as well as a few small Christmas food stalls, selling German sausages, and Belgium waffles, yum yum again, hehe 🙂 Really puts you in the festive spirit! 😀 We also had a nice stroll around the Chinese Quarter, not far from the Bullring!

Cadbury World

On the Sunday morning, me and mum travelled from Birmingham New Street train station to Bournville, to visit the highly anticipated Cadbury World (me and mum both love chocolate!) We learnt of the origins of the cocoa beans, and how cocoa trees were central to Aztec culture, were told of how entrepreneur Quaker John Cadbury first began his chocolate business all those years ago in Victorian Bull Street, enjoyed a cinema experience with special effect – a visual presentation showing how Cadbury chocolate is made in the factory, we had a play with liquid chocolate, writing our names “ ❤ Debbie and Lauren ❤ ” on the demonstration table,  we stepped onto the magical ‘beanmobile’ and enjoyed a gentle chocolate wonderland Cadabra ride, with many familiar enchanting chocolate characters (mum absolutely loved this!), watched chocolatiers demonstrate their impressive chocolate making techniques, sampled some warm Dairy Milk liquid chocolate with a choice of scrumptious toppings, and had great fun having our photo taken with the Green Screen experience, as well as posing for pictures with the Cadbury characters! Ace!

National Sea Life centre

On our last morning in Birmingham, me and mum ventured to the National Sea Life centre, situated on the Water’s Edge of Brindleyplace complex, within very easy walking distance from Jury’s Inn. We were very excited to see all the magnificent sea creatures, me and mum are both massive animal lovers! It certainly did not disappoint. We sauntered leisurely around the sea life centre, mesmerised by all the delightful creatures; octopuses, seahorses, sea turtles, sharks and stingrays (arghhh, haha!), jellyfish and so on. Our personal favourites however were the playful pretty penguins! They’re so cute and adorable with their little waddle, lovely animals!  Great visit!

Brindleyplace leisure

During our time in Birmingham, me and mum dined out at quite a few deluxe restaurants, cafés and bars, especially at Brindleyplace leisure complex; including Café Rouge, Zizzi’s and The Slug and Lettuce, as well as eating at Ed’s Easy Diner, on the waterfront overlooking the tranquil canal. We are both big foodies, and regularly go out for meals when back home in Yorkshire, so obviously it was not going to be any different on our little Birmingham city break! Very delicious and yummy food Birmingham has to offer!

Conclusion

Overall, me and mum had an absolutely amazing time visiting Birmingham! I would actually say, it was my favourite city break / holiday away with mum, and we have gone on quite a fair few trips together, including; Liverpool, London and Newcastle in the UK and Amsterdam and Paphos abroad. It was so good because it was not at all what we were expecting. Before we went away, a few people told us Birmingham was not a nice place to visit at all, that is was a bit rundown, slightly squalid and unpleasant. I almost cancelled our trip. We found it to be the total opposite – a very aesthetically pleasing, vibrant and exciting cosmopolitan city. Every Brummie we met was so so friendly too… In a nutshell…

Saw babby in Dirty Dancing!

Brum was bostin!

Tara-a-bit!   😀
